June’s Birthstones

June is one of the lucky months that have two birthstones: Pearl and Alexandrite.

Pearls are often seen as classy and sophisticated, often wore by Jackie Kennedy, Aubrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel, and so forth. Pearls carbon date back to 5,500 BC, which is over 7,500 years ago. Pearls are created within oysters (or other mollusks) after a threat as entered and the oyster protects its inner layer by encapsulating the irritant or threat with a translucent layer of smoothing nacre which then forms the “pearl”.

The Alexandrite is often described as “emerald by day, ruby by night’ due to its changing color in different lights. In the daylight, and Alexandrites give off a bluish-green tone, whereas at night it projects a purplish-red color. This color shift is due to the chemical composition. There is a slight trace of the chemical chromium, which is also found in emeralds. Due to the rarity of this chemical combination, Alexandrites are one of the rarest and most expensive gemstones.
